Too much gear can weigh you down—physically, mentally, and creatively.
A recent trip to London reminded me of this. I had a plan. I’d scouted locations. But the city had other ideas. It was packed, chaotic, and nothing went as I expected.
I could’ve called it a wash. But instead, I leaned into minimalism.
I had my Fujifilm X100VI with me—light, compact, and simple. That’s when it clicked: less gear meant more freedom. I stopped worrying about lens choices or missed shots. I started paying attention to the story I was telling with each frame.
That stripped-back setup didn’t just save the day—it changed how I shoot.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
- Fewer options = faster decisions = more shooting.
- One camera, one lens sharpens your eye for composition.
- You’re less visible, which helps in street or candid photography.
- It’s way more enjoyable.
Photography doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need a bag full of lenses to create something meaningful. You just need to be present.
