A few days ago, I set off on a long hike through the Peak District—just me, my Fujifilm X100VI, and a pair of barefoot hiking boots I’ve been meaning to test properly. I wasn’t sure how well my feet would cope, or if I’d get any photos worth keeping. But the results were better than expected, and I wanted to put a few thoughts down.

Along the trail, I captured a mix of landscapes and quieter moments—shots that probably wouldn’t have happened if I’d rushed. The slower pace of hiking gave me space to think more intentionally about what I was shooting.

Barefoot Hiking Boots: Worth It? I wore the Vivo Tracker Forest ESCs. They’re designed for rugged hikes but with a minimalist feel. It took a bit of getting used to, especially over rougher ground, but overall I liked the extra feedback from the trail. My feet didn’t feel wrecked at the end, which is saying something after hours on uneven terrain.

If you’re thinking about switching to barefoot boots, I’d say this: give yourself time to adjust, but they genuinely help you feel more connected to where you are.

The Camera Setup I shot everything on the Fujifilm X100VI using Classic Chrome with a custom recipe that gives a slightly warm, soft look without overdoing it. Here’s the full setup:

I like this setup for hiking. It gives you punchy colours without losing detail, and most of my shots didn’t need any editing.

Slowing Down, Seeing More One of the best parts of this hike was simply not rushing. Knowing I had the whole day to walk and shoot made it easier to wait for the right light or frame a better angle. It wasn’t about getting the perfect shot. It was about enjoying the act of taking photos.

If you’re someone who shoots a lot but doesn’t always stop to enjoy it, try combining photography with a long solo walk. It strips things back to the basics camera, feet, and time.

Watch the Video I filmed a bit of the hike and turned it into a chilled, photo-led video. If you enjoy quieter content about photography and the outdoors, you might enjoy it: Watch the video
